VIDEO: Ken Block Practices Gymkhana Drifting at Airport

9/11/2009

Watch as rally expert Ken Block practices Gymkhana at an unspecified airport strip. Gymkhana courses are similar to autocross, except that they incorporate alternative driving styles such as drifting and feature obstacles such as cones, tires, road barriers, and abandoned buildings. Drivers must maneuver through the track using techniques such as drifting, e-brake reversals, u-turn or 360 degree spins, and other advanced non-traditional styles.

Gymkhana is an unconventional sport managed by the Japan Auto Federation, which is a division of the FIA. Courses feature a start and end point, as wells as predetermined obstacles that drivers must memorize to get through as quickly as possible in order to win the event. Drivers are given the freedom to get through the obstacles in any way they choose, which is the focal point and excitement of the sport.

Drivers such as Ken Block are quickly popularizing the sport and have posted videos gaining millions of views on media sharing sites such as YouTube. Below is an example with Block driving.
