TECHNICAL: Nissan 370Z SynchroRev Match Transmission

2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

Offered as part of the optional $3000 sport package on the new Nissan 370Z, and standard on the NISMO Z, the SynchroRev Match Transmission does exactly what its name implies, matching the engine speed with the appropriate gear. Traditionally with a manual transmission, downshifting requires a blip of the throttle to avoid a harsh shift, characterized by a forward jerk of the car. Downshifting while braking is more difficult, requiring the driver’s right foot to operate the brake with the heel, while feathering the gas pedal with the toe, known as the “heel-toe” technique. This is usually only mastered by professional race drivers. Nissan’s close-ratio 6-speed manual includes the world’s first synchronized downshift rev-matching system, which allows drivers of any skill level to experience professional-like gear shift performance.

When activated, the system uses sensors around the base of the shifter to monitor which gear you are in, and which gear you plan on shifting in to. Using this information, the computer calculates the exact engine RPM by comparing the engine speed with the wheel speed, and blips the electronic throttle accordingly. This feature guarantees perfect down shifts every time, while doing it faster than a human could, and allowing the driver to concentrate more on cornering and braking. Nissan claims the system also improves vehicle handling dynamics by eliminating “shift shock” when the clutch is engaged, while also reducing stress on the engine and transmission.

While not entirely idiot-proof (it won’t prevent you from over-revving if you drop into 2nd gear at 80mph), the SRM transmission also helps with upshifts. Activated only by the clutch pedal, the engine will adjust to the proper RPM, eliminating any harshness than might result from letting the revs drop too low. While allowing the Average Joe to downshift like a pro, this new technology may not embraced by all. Those who appreciate the unmistakable feeling of being in total control of their driving may find this feature to be distracting. Even worse, some believe it may take part of the excitement out of driving. After all, boredom may very well be the number one enemy to sports cars. However, those who prefer using the difficult to master (yet very rewarding) heel-toe technique while down shifting can simply turn the system off at the push of a button.

In the end, Nissan has creating a great compromise between a standard do-it-yourself 6-speed manual and the sequential manual gearbox which fully automates the clutch. On top of the SyncrhoRev transmission in the sports package is a limited slip differential, 19-inch forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenzas, sport brakes, a front chin, and rear spoiler. For those drivers who aren’t pros but are looking for a car that does more than just commute, the sports package should be an obvious option.
