As always, BMW is hard at work on its next M car, but this time, it won’t be an M3 or M5. A report out of the U.K. confirms that BMW is hard at work turning the next generation 135i into a high performance M machine. The report states that the new ‘entry level’ M has become the top priority at the M division, which recently shuffled its management team and reprioritized its model lineup.

The current M5 was the first to receive a V10 powerplant, and we were just informed it will now also be the last. BMW reps have confirmed to Inside Line that the next M5 will feature a turbocharged V8 instead of the current V10. But this is BMW, so while they may be making efforts to reduce emissions and CO2, don’t expect the horsepower to be reduced.

BMW will be displaying its new 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition 3 Series sedan in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Like the majority of BMWs sold in Europe, this BMW will feature a diesel engine, something Americans are not accustomed to seeing in BMWs. What’s most impressive about this agile sedan is the 57.4 mpg it achieves on Europe’s combined driving cycle, without sacrificing much in performance.

The last time BMW sold a four cylinder model in the U.S. was in 1999 when it sold the 318ti, but to help reach the new fuel economy regulations in the U.S., BMW plans to bring back its four cylinder engines. Under new U.S. rules adopted in May, known as the revised CAFE standards, automakers’ fleet of cars must meet 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. In 2008, BMW’s American fleet averaged 26.5 mpg, significantly below its European average which already meets the 35.5 mpg limit due to its heavy diesel sales. Roughly 66% of BMWs sold in Europe are diesels.
