Honda/Acura used to make amazing coupes. Going back in history, Honda and its premium brand Acura gave us the light and affordable CRX, the NSX supercar, the CL rocket, the RSX, and the sporty Prelude and S2000. The Prelude was cut in 2001, the CL in 2003, NSX in 2005, RSX in 2006, and finally, the S2000 this upcoming year. Wow, it’s not easy being a coupe at Honda Motors. This leaves us with the Accord and Civic coupes, as well as the forthcoming hybrid hatch from Honda, the CR-Z. With the Acura NSX successor plans seemingly dead unless the economy and sales come back to pre-recession levels, we are pleased to hear that Acura might develop a new semi-luxury compact to compete with the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3.
Acura can’t seem to decide if they will build an NSX replacement or not. It seemed likely a few months ago when a front engine GT was spotted lapping the Nürburgring, but now Acura has once again changed its plans and axed the project. What is now certain is that Acura will not build a mid-engine supercar to replace the NSX of the 90s and early 2000s, or even a semi-exotic front-engine GT. What is still up in the air is whether or not Acura will build a less ambitious sports car.
A prototype of the provocative Acura ZDX luxury four-door sports coupe made its world debut at the New York International Auto Show. The production version of the dramatically styled prototype goes on-sale in the fall of 2009. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility. "The ZDX is truly a luxury performance coupe - plus," said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales. "The emotional coupe styling coupled with a luxurious and dramatic interior and surprising versatility, allows the ZDX to define its own segment and attract an entirely new customer."
