Next Corvette to Feature Split Window Design of ’63 Stingray

9/22/2009

Ed Welburn, Vice President of Global Design at GM, recently hinted that the next generation Corvette will bring back the split window design seen on the 1963 Corvette Stingray. Recently speaking to Inside Line, Welburn mentions, “The split window is something that I expect for the next Corvette. With the back-up cameras and blind-spot detection systems that we have these days, the visibility issue is much less of a problem.”

Welburn continued by stating that the Corvette Stingray Concept, as seen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie, would not be the upcoming C7 Corvette.

There have also been previous rumors that the designers were considering a mid-engine, rear-drive set up for the C7, but the split window design would make this more difficult. Due to the design hints and costs of the mid-engine design, we would expect the C7 to keep the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel drive setup.

Below are the photos of the current Corvette Stingray Concept. We’ll post new photos as soon as they are available.
