BMW chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer took a trip this week to visit the MINI plant in Oxford, England to deliver the good news. The MINI Coupe Concept is officially headed for production, as is another unnamed model to be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September.
The second car is most likely to be the MINI Roadster Concept recently spied next to the Coupe. Reithofer didn’t mention when the models would begin production, but sources familiar with the Coupe expect the models to be available in late 2010 as 2011 models. The concepts are based on the John Cooper Works, but it wasn’t mentioned if the models would also be available in Base and S variations as well, although it is expected.
According to the press release issued today, the MINI Coupe concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show will likely feature the 1.6 liter turbocharged John Cooper Works powertrain. The two-seater with a low roof line will feature near 50/50 weight distribution and will be the sportiest MINI model built to date.
Further details are expected soon, as the Frankfurt Motor Show is less than a month away.
